During an exchange, something is transferred to another. It's a representation that something is worth another. The cross is where release and exchange begins; it's where this exchange took place: old life vs. new life.
We must understand that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross not only provided salvation, but benefits and blessings for our remaining time on earth. However, we have a tendency to minimize what took place at the cross because of what we face in the world.
